It's always exciting when an underrepresented artist receives notoriety that's long overdue. Especially a humble, even mystical artist's artist like Brooklyn-based Chris Martin , who has been working steadily on an inquisitive, iconic and strangely illuminating body of paintings, drawings and collage works for more than 30 years. This week, PictureBox released a gratifyingly monumental collection of Martin's drawings , which weighs in at just over 620 pages and features a provocative essay by Peter Lamborn Wilson, who manages to evoke Hindu Tantric paintings, psychedelia, outsider art, Siberian shamanism, Theosophy, Voodoo, Nietzsche, Redon, Wilde, Blake, and more. Featured image, an untitled 1998 acrylic on paper, is reproduced from Chris Martin: Drawings.

Thom Mayne on 'Never Built Los Angeles'
Pritzker Prize-winning architect and founder of both Morphosis Architects and SCI-Arc , Thom Mayne , contributes the Foreword to Greg Goldin and Sam Lubell's highly anticipated compendium of unbuilt visionary architectural plans for the city of Los Angeles, Never Built Los Angeles , excerpted here.
Staff Favorite: Albert Contreras
We see a lot of books around here, and every once in a while something pops up that surprises us all. This season, one favorite is Marquand Books' new monograph on the Los Angeles cult painter, Albert Contreras , with Foreword by Dave Hickey, excerpted here.
'Hans Feurer' Previewed in Interview Magazine
Rachel Small previews Damiani's forthcoming monograph on fashion photographer Hans Feurer in the August issue of Interview .
Method & Math in 'Gerhard Richter: Patterns'
Patterns are ever-present elements in our daily lives. But despite their ubiquity, patterns by themselves seem always to remain at the edge of our consciousness, begging the question of what their place really is, and what importance they might carry—in art, as well as popular culture.

FROM THE SHELVES | STAFF FAVORITES
Information design pioneer Edward Tufte sums up the ever-increasing relevance of graphic design to our times with his observation that “clutter is a failure of design, not an attribute of information.” In the golden age of paraphernalia, it falls to the graphic designer to clarify the clutter, and the ability to compose visual and linguistic data so that it grabs both eye and mind determines the success of just about every merchandized product, from a flyer in the mailbox to the web. Historically, graphic design has also defined the look of entire avant-garde art movements and even whole eras, through album art and movie posters. Below is a selection of our finest monographs and surveys on graphic design, from modernist Italian travel posters to web design. continue
