What is meant by
by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners?
Board Certification in veterinary medicine is the only way to be able to call yourself a “specialist” in a specific species or area. The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) has categories for Avian (all birds) and Exotic Companion Mammals (ferrets, rabbits, rodents, insectivores, marsupials, primates and other companion mammals).
The process begins with credentialing: having enough years of experience, caseload, continuing education, and preferably publications and lecturing in the chosen field.
Next comes two case reports written to a specific format demonstrating advanced knowledge with the chosen species. These are reviewed for passage by other Diplomates of ABVP.
Once the case reports have been accepted, then the candidate is ready for the examination. The examination is 12 hours, including a practical examination.
Passage of all these steps allows the veterinarian the designation Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practice, and in the case of Dr. Johnson-Delaney, both Avian (since 2000) and Exotic Companion Mammals (since 2009). Recertification every 10 years is required to continue holding the board certification. Dr. Johnson-Delaney has already recertified once for the Avian Board.
A Diplomate has extensive knowledge of the species, above and beyond what a general practitioner in veterinary medicine has. This helps us provide the optimal care of your pet. Dr. Johnson-Delaney holds 2 board certifications and is a specialist in both birds and exotic companion mammals.
